Songkran 2008 in Phuket Town, Thailand (same location as in 2003). Previous years: 2007, 2006, 2003, 2002.The Songkran festival is the Thai new year, celebrated April 13-15, during which it is customary to sprinkle water on people to wish them a new year. Most people who venture outside on the 13th get soaked through the bone. Everyone, even police officers on duty, are fair game. Public splashing only lasts a few hours though before people get tired and go home.

Songkran 2007 in Hat Yai, Thailand. For previous years, see 2006, 2003, 2002.Another year, another Songkran. I tried using a plastic bag around the camera this year too, but it only trapped the water causing the camera lens to fog up. The camera ran fine completely soaked - for thirty minutes.Looking at the pictures this year, I seem to have focused more on people and less on splashing. Here are sixteen pictures of nearly three hundred snapped.

The local mutts had been washed and were drying outside in the sun. Dogs can look pretty miserable when wet.

Songkran 2006 in Surat Thani, Thailand. For previous years, see 2003, 2002.Songkran is the Thai newyear and falls on April 13 thru 15. During Songkran it is customary to sprinkle water on people; I got completely to-the-bone soaked about a dozen times. This year, in anticipation, I shrinkwrapped my camera in a tailormade sealed bag. Out of the almost 500 pictures I shot, here are twelve.Update 2007: I've added four more to the end.

Food Market in Surat Thani. I was on an evening walk when I happened to walk into a food market, just as it was getting dark and just as it started raining. There were suddenly pictures everywhere, but I hadn't brought the camera. After kicking myself hard (I still have bruises) I went back the next day with my camera. No rain that day, but I still got some good shots. But not like the day before *kick*

Morning market in Surat Thani, Thailand. The market opens 6am when the fishing boats come back. The goods are so fresh they often manage to flop, slither or crawl off the sales display plates. But they never get very far.

Even though I spent most of my time at or below sea level, I took a day off to drive around the area and take some pictures of the mountains.

Bangkok was hit by some torrental rain in the rain season in October. Several streets got flooded. My hotel lost power and my room became pitch black, so I hit the streets with my camera.

Heavy rain in Surat Thani, Thailand. This was the heaviest tropical rain I've experienced. Several stores in town got flooded. But as always, it's business as usual; Thais aren't stopped by a little rain. My camera is though - I need to get me a waterproof camera.

Markets rarely close before midnight, and people like to go shopping at night at all the illuminated stalls. Here you can find anything from roasted bugs to used shoes.

Songkran festival in Phuket, Thailand. Songkran is the Thai newyear and is celebrated between april 13th to 15th every year. Starting at dawn, kids arm themselves with powerful water squirtguns and buckets and spray everyone and anyone; if you don't want to get soaked, don't leave your house.

Tonsai is a small village, an hour from Krabi by boat. It's only reachable by boat. Mainly people who are into sports-climbing go there; it's one of the worlds premiere places for rock-climbing.

I happened to walk in to a performance of traditional Thai dance. These are all pictures taken with a digital camera in extremely low light. The camera kept fogging up, which ruined most of the few shots I got. Some of the pictures have weird halos from the fogging.

Songkran festival in Krabi, april 2002. All pictures with a digital camera that I had to let dry between shots. Finally it gave up completely, but I got some nice shots. I went back in 2003, check that section for more pictures.
