I am happy to note that people has taken objection to my last post. Therefore I am now continuing this thread. Check out a guy and his cat: www.catenema.com (Not for the faint-hearted).
Please support the guy’s endeavours by buying his T-shirts.
I’ve gone through the “important papers” that fills up your mailbox (the non-electronic kind). Amazing how much cruft being away six months will accumulate. So I went through that and the other pile I had of accumulated “hmm, this looks important, better file it” stuff.
I managed to throw out about 2/3rds, including everything with a date from last century. I feel so much cleaner now. Purer. Like having an enema.

Sweden is a socialist country. Among other things, it means the government is controlling the sale of alcoholic beverages. To this end, there exists a government controlled retail chain called “Systembolaget“. These stores are the only stores that are allowed to sell any alcoholic beverage stronger than a beer. (Bars can sell alcoholic beverages, but not in containers that can be brought out of the premises)
Fade to Nykvarn, a small sleepy suburb to a slightly larger suburb of Stockholm.
For the 7000 or so who live here, the opening of a Systembolaget branch was a big event. Lots of people came, even though it was in the middle of a working day. According to the press secretary of Systembolaget, it was the biggest turnout he ever heard of. Here’s a blurb (swedish) from the local rag:
I går öppnade Systembolaget sin butik - landets minsta - i Nykvarns centrum. Och intresset att botanisera bland butikens 440 artiklar var stort på tisdagsförmiddagen. “Jag har aldrig varit med om så mycket folk vid en invigning av våra butiker”, säger Systembolagets pressansvarige, Björn Rydberg.
Unfortunately, the paper doesn’t have permanent URL links. Sheesh, when will people learn…
In sweden now. I’m using my beloved iBook to blog today. I promised an ‘after’ shot, so here it is. I was expecting snow here, but it’s all gone already, so the after shot is surprisingly similar to the ‘before’… but about 20 degrees C colder.
Flight trip was surprisingly uneventful. Plane-food was horrible, maybe even a new all-time-worst. They had TFT screens for everyone, where you could select movies, radio and even play Supernintendo. I did the latter.
When it was time to sleep, the girl next to me (who I never spoke to) leaned her shoulder/back against me, so we leaned against eachother instead of the armrest. Quite comfy. I could feel her breathing slowing down as she went to sleep. I slept like a baby…
This was Malaysian airlines, and since most malaysians are muslims, they had - I’m not making this up - a special screen in the entertainment console showing the direction towards Mecca. Really. I wonder what muslims do on other airlines; maybe they can ask a stewardess for current directions.
Hmm, wrong timezone. Forgot to change… This should be posted 16.50.
Last day (in Thailand, that is!). Lotsa things to take care of. Hey, it’s only 11.30 and I’ve finished a good third of my TODO list!
My subscription with MyComicsPage.com has gone sour. Apparently they’re not able to bill me. And they’re not replying to my emails either. Guess they don’t want my money.
I still haven’t told everybody I’m leaving…
I’m heading for Sweden tomorrow, so this is my last day here in Phuket (for a while…). I still haven’t told people here I’m leaving - putting it off I guess.
I’m going to take a last picture before I leave, and a picture as I get to Sweden. It’s still snow there you know… It’ll be a nice contrast.
Songkran death toll is now 357 dead and 22,734 injured. They’re hoping to have a few less dead than last year, when 567 died. Blows your mind doesn’t it?
In related news, SARS worldwide death toll is now 144. For an eyewitness look from it’s epicenter Hong Kong, check out the daily Big White Guy.
Compared to the Thai govenments war on drugs, which in three months has killed som 1500 people, Songkran and SARS seems like the sniffles.
As the Chinese say, ‘may you live in interesting times’…
Have now used the allmighty W3C validator to make all my code XHTML 1.0 compliant. My site is now sporting the spiffy XHTML check logo. I dare you to click it! :)
Next up: Making the stuff in the navigation bar actually contain something!
I forgot about the downside of Songkran. Reading the newspaper yesterday brought me back to reality. 192 dead and 12000 injured in Songkran festivities throughout Thailand. And that’s in only two days. Also in the Nation.
The government went as far as to outlaw “high powered” squirtguns, but it didn’t deter people from using them.
On a side note, they also banned young women from wearing tops with “spaghetti straps“. That didn’t work either…
Songkran is the Thai newyear, every year April 13. For Thais, it’s a time to spend with family and wishing them new year by sprinkling water on them.
In recent years, the custom of “sprinkling water” has turned into a water fragfest. Some people here try to avoid going out today. I ofcourse took the other route - I brought the camera!
After walking around in Phuket Town for hours and miles (and getting completely soaked every few meters), I had taken around 250 pictures. I will put up a selection here asap.
Online at last! Nyehehehe. Hosted at e-starr.com. The DNS is actually not live yet, so you can’t be watching this just yet… :) Another 24h for the DNS to replicate…
This site is actually coming somewhere…
I have never toyed with CSS before. Boy, am I impressed. Why aren’t sites using this, instead of the horrible table-style formats they are using?
The blog part of the site is using MovableType engine. It is extremely powerful, and actually not too difficult to get started with. I’m glad I found it.
